Indian Railway Accommodation

Indian Railways renders several classes of accommodation in the trains of India. This ranges from the luxurious Air-conditioned 1st class to 2nd class accommodation for sitting. The majority of India's large middle class population travels in sleeper class. Following are the accommodation classes in operation.

The Executive class in Shatabdi type indian trains is also treated as Ist AC. Comfort levels are higher in the First Class AC compartments. The air conditioned carriages are much cleaner and more restful, however they distinctly lack the spirited nature of sleeper class. Being the most expensive class, the fares are equivalent with airlines. With capacity of 18 passengers, this coach is carpeted and has decent sleeping accommodation. AC Chair Car is an air-conditioned seater coach, where groups of five seats are arranged in a row. This class is meant for day travel between cities. Executive Class Chair Car comprises an air-conditioned seater coach, where four seats are arranged in a row. Sleeper Class is the most common class of accommodation. In this class, maximum of ten coaches could be attached. These coaches are regular sleeping coaches. General Class is the cheapest accommodation class offered by IR. Here, seats are made of pressed wood and seat is not assured since the tickets for such class are issued usually two hours prior to the actual departure of train. Cheap Hotels India

In the lowest class of accommodation of passenger train, one compartment is assigned for ladies. There are several berths or seats in second class and sleeper class that are reserved for ladies.
